Hvala, Slovenia.

Ljubljana has come to life! I ventured out last night on my own in persuit of more journals for the kids. They have filled the large blank books provided by their teachers for daily art & reflection (much better than this blog) and only certain paper will do.

I had a map to the art supply store and walked the 6 blocks there and back. We noticed coming home from the caves that this city was hopping! Cyclists, roller blades, outdoor cafes, people in parks & shops humming in a busy urban vibe that wasn't here on the weekend. We also discovered the promised undercurrent of English language. Apparently it dissapears as businesses and the university are closed on the weekend. But Monday morning brought the return of young faces and enough English for us to relax.

It's actually meant to be a stopping point to re-gather ourselves before Germany. From here we plan to send packages, get our hair cut and save a few dollars. On our list of must finds- English books and blank sketch books.

Slovenians are the most literate population in all of Europe (I'm quoting Brett, not sure of the source). 65% of them read at least 1 book per year. As I walk along the streets to the supply store, I pass several small groups gathered outside of cafes, book in hand, deep in discussion. I also glance into windows- in community rooms and shops, groups are gathered, holding books and talking. Granted, our apartment is near the University, but I doubt Monday night is common book club night. I think this is a national pastime. I'm tempted to sit down.

The craft shop is huge and I spend too much time in the wool section, feeding a fiber addiciton. I am addressed by the clerk in Slovenian, German and then Italian. I respond in my pitiful Italian...then she says "Oh English? Don't worry I can speak English. Would you like some wool?"
Don't worry? Can she tell?

Yes, I'm very grateful that a nation of literate young people have taken the time to learn and speak my language and several others. It warms my heart and makes me want to do the same.

"I need art books and wool, Hvala."

Hvala- thank you.
