Landwehr-brau

It wasn’t a priority, but we are minutes from a small, family-owned brewery. How can we visit Bavaria and not have a beer?
We scheduled ourselves for an English tour a few days in advance. Traveling in the off season, every tour is very intimate and here too we have the tour guide for ourselves. She says “My English colleague is home ill. She has called me and my English is not good. You can excuse me and come in?”
She reads the English tour script with an emphatic smile: “Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Landwehr family brewery. It is our pleasure to welcome you to tour and sample the tradition of fine beer making.” This woman has guts.
She flips switches, turns on lights, walks us in and out of coolers and gestures to the equipment and ingredients. It’s a little speedy, but fun. We do our best with German questions and she does her best with English answers.
The tour concludes with a visit to the beer hall- five placemats, coasters, a basket of huge pretzels, cola & apple cider for the kids and, of course, the 6 beers of Landwehr-bräu brewery. She proudly pours for us and herself. Hers goes down. I’m sure she’s glad to have that English script behind her. How do we begin to explain that Brett is allergic to beer? We don’t…we slip him the apple cider while she and I have a shot of hops Schnapps. We just want to see the beer, we don’t want to drink it.
We ask about her family and working at the brewery. The party is in full swing with the kids enjoying the cola and the basket of pretzels replenished. I suppose we could have had a little polka, but it was time to go. We package up the 5 untapped beers and said our good-byes. We were a rare batch of sober legs leaving the Landwehr-bräu hall, I’m sure.
