Assisi is a small town. Most of the shop-keepers ask the same thing as we visit- “Do you like Assisi? It’s beautiful, eh?”
It is- clean, softly lit at night to accentuate the stone walls and archways, delicate shops of soaps, religious treasures and local food. The Delafield of Italy. We can walk from one end of the town to the other in about 30 minutes.
We trusted our car navigator (tom tom, Garmin, etc.) to lead us beyond the walls. Trying to find a trattoria a local woman recommended, we were led up into the hills. After several “switchbacks” on single lane roads, even Brett had had enough. We ended up at a restaurant just beneath the town walls.
This was our first attempt at a “sit-down and order” restaurant in Italy. I have cooked at home for most meals. But when we eat out, it’s been simple enough to get a good slice of pizza by pointing.
We ordered for the kids- pasta & calzone. Brett and I took a stab at the menu. I recognized the word “porcini” and figured on an evening of mushrooms. Both of us were a little shocked to be served huge steaks. I think it has been 20 years since I’ve eaten steak in a restaurant. For the sake of adventure and our hemoglobin we dug in. We’ve now included a menu translator in our day pack.
